Scoliosis

Scoliosis

Scoliosis refers to the abnormal bending of the spine to the left or right, with the spine being C-shaped or S-shaped. The onset age is between 10 and 17 years old, and the incidence ratio of girls to boys is 9 to 1. The standard for judging scoliosis is that the spinal curvature is more than 15 degrees, which is considered "scoliosis". When the patient's spine is more than 20 degrees, he will feel back pain, the shape of the back begins to be distorted, and daily life will be affected. The cause of scoliosis is usually due to unbalanced growth of the spine and muscles or abnormal growth of spinal nerve function. Some are caused by viral infections, such as polio, neurasthenia, etc., and a small part is caused by congenital hereditary or birth defects.

Scoliosis usually occurs in children in their teens, and in girls one year before their first menstruation. At this time, they are in puberty - the fastest growth period of the spine, which is also the golden time for treatment. The disease occurs unconsciously, the patient does not feel pain, and it is difficult to detect from the outside. If ignored, these rapidly deformed spines will affect the functioning of the spinal nerves.

If children are found to have mild or moderate scoliosis between the ages of 10 and 12, their chances of recovery are higher than those of adults or young people. Therefore, chiropractors often recommend that children aged 10 or above undergo a scoliosis check once a year and do spinal exercises at least once a week to strengthen the muscles and spine, help the spine grow and prevent the formation of scoliosis.

How to treat?

Scoliosis can be treated by: 1) non-surgical treatment and 2) surgical treatment

When the scoliosis is less than 45 degrees, non-surgical treatments may be considered, including spinal correction surgery to correct the scoliosis of the spine, or the patient may be treated with a special orthopedic brace as needed.

When the scoliosis is above 45 degrees, or the patient cannot tolerate the orthopedic back brace and the curvature continues to increase, orthopedic surgery should be considered for correction and fixation, including cutting open the back, implanting a metal frame, and performing bone fusion.

Non-surgical treatment and exercise therapy:

Diagnosis and adjustment of the spine is done through three steps: "anti-scoliosis treatment" on a special treatment bed, "Schroth optimization exercise" and "manual reduction chiropractic correction" to make the treatment effect more significant and effective.

Tips: In terms of treatment, doctors generally require surgery for scoliosis of 45 degrees or more, but recommend "conservative treatment" for scoliosis of 45 degrees or less: including observation, physical therapy, and brace wearing. In fact, many patients with scoliosis of 45 degrees or less do not actively receive treatment, missing the golden opportunity for treatment.

(I) Treatment in the opposite direction of scoliosis

"Reverse scoliosis treatment" is a specialized chiropractic technique used by chiropractors. According to the patient's scoliosis direction, the treatment is performed in the reverse direction by using the traction and flexion (Lateral Flexion) of a professional chiropractor's treatment bed.

(ii) Schroth Movement

"Schroth Optimization Exercise" (Schroth Method by Dr. Weiss). Schroth was originally invented by Dr. Weiss's grandmother in Germany. But since it took three months or more to treat scoliosis patients at that time, and exercise therapy exercises for 6 hours a day, it is simply impossible for today's urban people and schoolchildren! After a hundred years of improvement, Dr. Weiss developed a set of targeted therapeutic exercises suitable for urban people and with significant effects. This exercise is not easy and requires patients to use Dantian breathing to cooperate. Because when using the Dantian/diaphragm mode of breathing, the spine can be relaxed and will not move up and down, and this breathing method can definitely help patients perform Schroth exercises. Do Dantian breathing 50 times a day to make it a habit, and then combine it with Schroter exercises to improve scoliosis problems and prevent scoliosis from worsening.

I will teach patients to use this exercise in conjunction with treatment to enhance the effect of treatment in daily life.

(III) Manual repositioning and chiropractic correction

Manual therapy is used to restore the spine and joints to their original positions, so that the body's bones are in place, ensuring that they are evenly aligned and the force is balanced, so that the affected area is free from unnecessary pressure and can be repaired.
